To that end, we recently acquired Reevoo, a smaller competitor that focusses primarily on enterprise clients. We are now working on an exciting and technically challenging client migration program and an overall platform upgrade, to position us as a scaled up single brand business in the Consumer Feedback, CX & Data Insights arena.

About the role
Reporting to our CTO the Head of Server-Side Engineering acts as one of three department heads leading a section of the Technology Team’s engineers. You will have a specific focus across the wider team on the advocacy of server-side engineering excellence backed by your domain expertise and passion for backend technologies. Beyond your technical contributions your key priority as a manager of people is to build and maintain a high calibre team, safeguard their health and enable them to succeed in delivering high performance and productivity.

Responsibilities:

Strategic

  • Evolve, contribute and deliver against the Technology Team’s strategy and quarterly OKRs
  • Work closely with our product team to understand the problems we need to solve for our customers and how we can solve these with innovative technical solutions
  • Build our engineering capability by providing technical leadership and career development for the department and wider engineering community

Leadership & Management

  • Continually strive to build and maintain a high-performance culture within your team
  • Create opportunities for engineers to grow their skills and experience
  • Hold regular 1:2:1s with members of your team, giving frequent actionable feedback on their performance
  • Continuous improvement/evolution of our agile engineering practices
  • Fostering autonomy and self-organisation within our squads, making final decisions when necessary
  • Contribute towards the psychological safety on your team

Technical

  • Encourage alignment across the team on standards of practice and design patterns
  • Establish effective mechanisms for distributing knowledge, working against single points of failure
  • Make technical contributions to product architecture, conducting code reviews and supporting team members on overcoming blockers
  • Contribute towards programme level planning from both an execution and architectural perspective
  • Continuous improvement of product quality, security, and performance
  • Investigate emerging trends in engineering approaches, perform horizon-scanning for the organisation and introduce innovative ways of working.

Required Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, similar technical discipline or demonstrable equivalent career experience
  • At least six years of commercial software engineering experience in Rest APIs and OOP, preferably Java 8 or higherExperience of developing solutions within public cloud, preferably Google Cloud Platform
  • Proven experience in architecting complex software solutions and researching the appropriate technologies to deliver them
  • Experience of managing and developing a team in an agile environment
  • Experience of working with co-located and remote developers
  • Experience of Agile development design principles
  • Source version control, ideally GitHub
  • Development using industry standard best practices
  • Test driven development or business driven development experience
  • Working knowledge of Continuous Integration solutions and best practice branching strategies
  • Deployment automation: CI/CD, test automation, e2e testing
  • Outstanding oral and written communication skills, capable of achieving consensus across both technical and non-technical audiences

Preferred

  • Software development of a product/service provided as SaaS
  • Experience in using JIRA
  • Experience in using Github
  • Cloud based services, ideally Google Cloud Platform
  • Development on highly-scalable, highly-available applications with large datasets
  • Working with databases, both relational/SQL and No-SQL
  • Spring development
  • Micro-services and containerised computing
  • Experience working within the React ecosystem (our stack is React, Redux, Styled Components and TypeScript
